Youve got tons of items to wash, some of which are stained or have special care instructions, and everything needs to be sorted according to color.
We dont want to ruin anything but we want to be as efficient as possible. Here are a few laundry hacks that will change the game and help you have a less stressful laundry day.
1. Keep the machine clean with baking soda and vinegar
Since a washing machine is constantly being filled with water, the moisture can produce mildew and make your clothes smell weird. Its not hard to keep it clean, you just need to know how.
Start by wiping down the inside of your washing machine with a rag soaked in hydrogen peroxide. Make sure you pay attention to tight crevices in the drum and get out anything that might be stuck.
Then, simply add a half cup of baking soda and a quart of vinegar to an empty washing machine. Set the water temperature to the hottest setting and run the machine through a full cycle. This should disinfect the parts of the machine you cant reach with a rag.
Repeat this process once a month to prevent any mildew from growing and you can keep your clothes smelling fresh all the time.
2. Use baking soda to whiten your whites
If your white clothes are starting to look a little dull and dingy, just add a half cup of baking soda to the wash along with the detergent and run the load like normal.
If your clothes really need an extra boost of brightness, boil a gallon of water and add a half cup of lemon juice. Soak a few white clothing items in the hot lemon water for 30 minutes to an hour, then wash like normal for vibrant whites.
3. Darken black clothingwith coffee
If youve noticed your black shirts and pants are looking a little light and gray, use coffee to darken them up. Make two or three cups of black coffee and add it to the washer. Put in ONLY black clothing and set it to the rinse cycle. Your clothes should come out darker and the color will last longer.
4. Salt can keep bright colors from fading
Colored clothing can fade quickly, even if youre using the right detergent. To preserve those bright colors, add one-third cup of salt to your wash and run the normal cycle. This will work especially well if done the first time a new piece of clothing is washed and will help keep the colors from fading over time.
5. Line-dry clothes on a pool noodle to avoid creases
If you frequently use a line or rack to dry your clothes, youre probably familiar with the annoying creases in your shirts and pants. To avoid them, cut a slit along the side of a pool noodle and use it to encase the line or rods on the drying rack. Youll be able to dry your clothes on the line without having to iron them afterward.
6. Speed up drying time by adding a towel
A simple way of quickening the drying process is by adding a towel to the dryer. It will help absorb some of the moisture from damp clothes and cut down on drying time and your utility bill.
7. Take notes with a dry erase marker

If youre worried about ruining clothes by putting them into the dryer, heres an easy fix for you. To remember which clothes cant go into the dryer or have other special care instructions, use a dry erase marker. You can write down each clothing item and what care it needs directly into the washing machine.
8. Put tennis balls in the dryer to make clothes extra soft
If youll be drying anything soft and feathery like a comforter, pillow or coats, throw a few tennis balls in the dryer to fluff them up. The tennis balls will also help them dry faster along with helping to soften them up.
9. Never lose a sock again by using mesh bags
Weve all lost a few socks while doing our laundry, but we never actually know what happened to them while they were in the machine. Mesh lingerie bags are good for more than your intimates theyll keep your socks from getting lost and eaten up by the washing machine and you wont have to dig through piles of clothes to find matching pairs.
10. Get a folding guide
If you have a hard time folding clothes, whether it takes you a long time to achieve the fold you want or you just dont know how to fold well at all, investing in a folding guide can solve your problem.
A guide will help you not only fold clothing more quickly, but youll achieve clean, consistent folds every time.
